History
The area around Gujarat was settled during the reign of SHER SHAH, the SURI ruler before the Mughals. The area was named KHAWASPUR in honor of KHAWAS Khan, the governor of ROHTAS, SURI. Local traditions state that Gujarat is the second town to be built in the area, the first of which was destroyed by Mongol invasions in 1303.
The city came under the Mughal Empire and further developed during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, who built the fort of Gujarat in 1580, and in about 1597 the local clergy forced the GUJARS to settle in the city. The city was then named after the Gujjar tribes. In about 1605, Syed Abdul QASIM was given this city by Akbar as a JAGIR.
During the reign of Emperor Jahangir, Gujarat was part of the route used by the Mughal emperors to visit Kashmir.
Tradition has it that SHAH DOLA, the most famous elder of Gujarat, is credited with saving the city from Sikh Guru HARGOBIND when the people of Gujarat mocked him during his stay when he was returning from Kashmir around about 1620. Gujarat News in Urdu
