Former Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani Dies at 74

Doha: Qatar’s former Emir, Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, has died at the age of 74, according to an official statement issued by Qatar’s Amiri Diwan.

The royal court confirmed that Sheikh Hamad passed away on Sunday morning and expressed profound sorrow over the nation’s loss. In its statement, the Amiri Diwan prayed for Allah’s mercy upon the late Emir and extended condolences to the royal family and the people of Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, overseeing a period of significant economic growth, expanded diplomatic influence, and major infrastructure development that transformed the Gulf nation into a prominent regional and global player.

In 2013, he voluntarily transferred power to his son, the current Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in a rare and peaceful succession that marked a new chapter in Qatar’s leadership.

Sheikh Hamad’s tenure is widely regarded as a defining era in Qatar’s modern history, during which the country strengthened its economy, expanded its international presence, and launched ambitious development projects.
