Rajkummar Rao: I didn’t want to play a visually impaired person like how others have done it

NEW DELHI, April 23 (Online): Rajkummar Rao embraces a fresh approach to portraying a visually impaired character in “Srikant.” Rejecting conventional depictions, he observed real-life behaviors of visually impaired individuals, infusing authenticity into his performance. Rao’s dedication reflects in his nuanced portrayal, showcasing a depth rarely explored in previous portrayals.

Rajkummar Rao is one of the finest actors in the country today; he is known for his layered and nuanced performances. He will now be seen in Tushar Hiranandani’s next directorial venture, Srikant. A biopic on visually impaired businessman Srikant Bolla. And going by the trailer of the film, we can assure you that Rajkumar has given his all for the film.

Talking about preparation for the role, in an exclusive interview with Etimes, Rajkummar opened up about how he didn’t want to play the role like it has been done over the years in Hollywood and Bollywood films. He said, “The first obvious thought when you play a visually impaired person is to look at one point and be dead from your eyes, and I didn’t want to do that because I’ve seen a lot of that happen.” So when I started meeting, visually impaired people, I realized that out of 20, maybe there was one who was behaving like this, and for the rest of them, there was constant movement on their face, constant movement of their muscles, etc., and it was so interesting and how come nobody has ever done it, so I picked up to play Srikant.”
“I also learned that they would always sit slightly diagonally to you and not face you completely as they focused with their ears,” added Rajkumar.
