ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry on Monday said the unanimous decision of the Court of Arbitration on the Indus Waters Treaty was a decisive victory for Pakistan’s principled legal and diplomatic position.
In a post on X, he said the Court had made it unequivocally clear that India could not unilaterally suspend, terminate or place the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance.
The Treaty, he said, remained fully valid and binding on both countries. The minister said India’s attempts to justify its position on grounds including sovereignty, alleged material breach, terrorism, changed circumstances, armed conflict and countermeasures had failed before the Court.
The ruling reinforced a fundamental principle that international treaties could not be set aside unilaterally, he added.
He said the Court had also granted important interim measures concerning the Ratle Hydroelectric Project, placing restrictions on specified construction activities and requiring India to report changes to the construction schedule.
“Today’s ruling is a clear victory for Pakistan, international law and the sanctity of treaties. Pakistan stood firmly by its legal rights, and the Court has vindicated that position,” he said.
The minister said, “India’s attempt to undermine the Indus Waters Treaty has suffered a clear legal setback. Pakistan has emerged stronger on the diplomatic and legal front.”
