Islamabad 04 Jan (Online): It looks like the future of Netflix’s lauded comedy-horror show Wednesday is quite uncertain. Although the blockbuster hit series just released its first season on November 23, Paul Tassi from Forbes reports that there is a high possibility that it will not be renewed for a second season.
The first reason for this is the rights to the series, which as it turns out, is not entirely Netflix’s as the film is a project of MGM production.
Secondly, back in March 2022, Amazon and MGM closed an $8.5 million merger. According to the aforementioned publication, at the time of this deal, Amazon stated it had no intent to make all MGM content exclusive to
Prime Video, but things might have changed after the show’s success.
Forbes notes that two things may be unfolding under the wraps now, which would also explain why Netflix is taking its time to announce a second season for Wednesday. The first scenario might include Amazon cancelling its deal with Netflix and instead releasing the upcoming seasons on its service, given that Prime Video and Netflix are head-on competitors.
The second scenario might require Amazon to pay a huge sum of money to Netflix in order to keep Wednesday on the same streaming service, which seems like a very unlikely action Amazon will take, but the high viewership of the show could also influence the decision too, suggests Forbes.
MGM productions can also pull some strings and sever its deal with Amazon, or ask for more money, but nothing can be certain unless an official statement is released by any of the parties. In the end, Forbes reports that no one exactly knows what’s going on behind the scenes, but everything will come to light soon as the decision for a renewal is announced.
