New Delhi: The Kakroach Janta Party has described Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation as a victory for democracy, saying the government must fulfil two additional demands before the protest can be called off.
A party spokesperson announced that peaceful torchlight marches would be held across the country on Sunday.
Party spokesperson Saurabh Das termed the development a major victory. He said the protesters had been invited for talks at 3:30 p.m., but they would not end their protest until all their demands were accepted and formally documented in writing.
Kakroach Janta Party founder and president Abhijeet Deepke said the government had previously claimed that ministers did not resign under its rule.
“The world bows, but there must be someone capable of making it bow. We have done it,” he said.
Deepke described the resignation as the “first wicket,” adding that the party would not stop there.
“This is only the beginning. I salute all the students and volunteers who have been sitting here for the past 36 days,” he said.
He said the protest would continue until the government accepted two further demands. These include compensation for the families of students who reportedly died by suicide following the examination paper leak and action against police officers involved in the July 20 crackdown on demonstrators.
Deepke said Pradhan’s resignation proved that a minister could be forced to step down if people refused to bow before the government, adding that citizens should not be afraid in a democracy.
