‘Sovereignty sold for 1 billion’ says opposition as govt gets Senate approval for SBP Amendment Bill 2022

ISLAMABAD – January 28 (ONLINE): Opposition parties in Senate of Pakistan have direly criticized government for State Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2021 which was passed by the upper house of parliament with single vote majority on Friday.

Opposition members of Senate of Pakistan said Friday that the opposition rejects State Bank of Pakistan (Amendment) Bill 2021.

Reacting to earlier development where Senate of Pakistan passed the bill on Friday, PPP senator Sherri Rehman said that Friday’s senate session was rigged as ‘covid-positive members were brought to attend the session with oxygen masks on their faces’.

“Government included the bill in today’s meeting’s agenda without letting anyone know. They sold out country’s sovereignty for just one billion rupees” Sherri said.

Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar said that chairman senate lost his impartiality by casting his vote in favor of the bill. Senator Afnanullah Khan said that government’s allies did not stand by its side as MQM-P did not vote in favor of the bill.

On the other hand, eight members from opposition parties and four from treasury benches remained absent from Friday’s Senate meeting.
Opposition’s Yousuf Raza Gilani, Shafeeq Tarin, Nuzhat Sadiq, Talha Mehmood, Mushahid Hussain, Naseema Ehsan, Qasim Ranjhu and Sikandar Mahindru reportedly remained absent from Friday’s meeting.

On the other hand, Hilal-ul-rehman, Hidayatullah, Khalida Ateeb and Faisal Sabzwari remained absent from the treasury benches.
According to sources, senator Nuzhat Sadiq is currently in Canada while Mushahid Hussain Syed is suffering from Covid-19.
