After 25 years of marriage, Tom decided it was finally time to add a little excitement to his relationship.
On their anniversary morning, he looked at his wife, Susan, and said with a confident smile:
“Darling, tonight I’ve planned something special. Something romantic. Something that will make you feel twenty-five again.”
Susan nearly fainted.
“Really?” she asked.
“Absolutely.”
The whole day she couldn’t concentrate. She told her friends, her sister, even the neighbor.
“Tom is planning a romantic surprise!”
By evening, Susan had her hair done, wore her favorite dress, and even put on the expensive perfume she’d been saving for years.
At 7 PM sharp, Tom arrived home carrying a mysterious box.
Susan’s heart was racing.
Tom placed the box on the dining table.
“Open it,” he said dramatically.
With trembling hands, Susan removed the ribbon, lifted the lid, and stared inside.
There was a bathroom scale.
Silence.
A very long silence.
Tom immediately realized this was not the reaction he had expected.
“Susan,” he said nervously, “I can explain—”
But Susan had already picked up the scale.
The next morning, Tom woke up in the hospital.
The doctor entered the room and asked, “Sir, what exactly happened?”
Tom sighed.
“Well, Doctor, my wife opened the anniversary gift and got a little emotional.”
The doctor nodded.
“That explains the broken arm. But what about the black eye?”
Tom groaned.
“That happened when I tried to explain that the scale wasn’t the gift.”
The doctor looked confused.
“What was the actual gift?”
Tom pointed toward the corner of the room.
There sat a brand-new luxury cruise brochure.
The doctor laughed.
“So why didn’t you show her that first?”
Tom shook his head.
“Because after twenty-five years of marriage, I still thought the words ‘Guess what comes with the cruise?’ were a good opening line.”
The doctor stared at him for a moment and said:
“Tom, I don’t think you’re here because of the scale.”
“I know,” Tom replied.
“I’m here because I’m apparently still learning how marriage works.” 😄
