Retired Husband Takes Over Grocery Shopping… One Tiny Note Costs a Small Fortune!

The Retirement Surprise

After 42 years of marriage, George finally retired.

On his first morning at home, he wandered into the kitchen where his wife, Margaret, was enjoying her coffee.

“Now that I’m retired,” George announced proudly, “I’m going to help around the house.”

Margaret nearly dropped her mug.

“Really?”

“Absolutely,” George said. “I’ll handle all the grocery shopping from now on.”

Margaret smiled. “That would be wonderful.”

So George headed to the supermarket with a short list:

  • Bread
  • Milk
  • Eggs

An hour later, he returned carrying six giant shopping bags.

Margaret looked inside.

There were:

  • 12 loaves of bread
  • 8 gallons of milk
  • 36 cartons of eggs
  • 4 watermelons
  • 17 cans of soup
  • A lawn flamingo
  • And a fishing rod

Margaret stared in disbelief.

“George! What on earth happened?”

George shrugged.

“Well, I met my friend Bob in aisle three. We got talking about fishing.”

“Yes…?”

“Then I remembered we might need snacks.”

“George, why did you buy 432 eggs?”

George proudly pulled out the shopping list.

Margaret read it aloud:

‘Bread, Milk, Eggs.’

Then she noticed George had written a note underneath.

‘If they have avocados, get six.’

Margaret looked at him.

“They had avocados?”

George nodded.

“Yep.”

“So you bought six avocados?”

George grinned.

“No.”

“They had avocados… so I got six of EVERYTHING.”
