‘Govt disowned Media Authority bill’ claims PML-N Javed Lafeef

Islamabad – September 7 (Online): PML-N leader and head of National Assembly’s standing committee on information and broadcasting Javed Latif has claimed that minister for information and broadcasting has disowned proposed media authority bill, demanding that “government should then explain who else wants to control media”

Talking to media in Islamabad on Tuesday, Javed Latif said that government has dis-associated itself from proposed media authority bill. “Ministers buzz in our ears that this is not their bill” he claimed, asking “then government should clarify who wants to control media?”

Javed Latif said that those who refer Jinnah’s sayings should also act upon them. “You cannot control freedom of speech by pressing the switch” he said.

Talking about the proposed media authority bill, he said that National Assembly’s standing committee would never pass the bill. Whole nation stands with media and will never accept such harsh restrictions on freedom of speech.

He said that imposing restrictions and banning media would only harm country. “If you want to control democracy, accountability, elections and their results; then remember the past consequences” he warned government.
Javed Latif said that results will be out of control if government intends to control everything.

He said that National Assembly’s standing committee has many times asked about developments made in interrogations into cases about violence against journalists but nobody is ready to answer.
