HEBEI: China has introduced an ultra-fast commercial 10-gigabit broadband service in parts of Hebei Province, marking a significant advancement in fixed-line internet infrastructure.
Developed by China Unicom in partnership with Huawei, the service uses advanced 50G Passive Optical Network technology. Tests recorded download speeds of up to 9,834 Mbps, upload speeds of 1,008 Mbps and latency as low as three milliseconds.
At these speeds, a 20GB high-definition or 4K film could theoretically be downloaded in less than 20 seconds under ideal conditions.
Experts believe the technology could benefit telemedicine, distance learning, smart agriculture, cloud computing and industrial automation, all of which depend on fast, stable and reliable connectivity.
The rollout is part of China’s broader digital-development strategy, which includes strengthening cloud infrastructure, expanding broadband access and building networks capable of supporting artificial intelligence and smart devices.
The service is currently a limited regional rollout rather than a nationwide network. The widely reported speed is 9,834 Mbps—not 9,934 Mbps. IntelliNews reported the deployment details.
