Washington: US President Donald Trump has voiced his support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, warning that the global football governing body would be making a “big mistake” if it removed him from office.
In a statement posted on his Truth Social platform, Trump said the World Cups staged under Infantino’s leadership had been the most successful in history. He claimed that the tournament would not achieve the same level of success or profitability if Infantino were replaced.
“It would be a big mistake for FIFA to even think about replacing President Gianni Infantino for any reason,” Trump said.
Describing Infantino as an “outstanding person,” Trump claimed that the FIFA president had overseen four of the most successful World Cup tournaments to date.
“If Infantino leaves, the World Cup will never again be as successful or profitable,” the US president added.
