Coronavirus: Latest global developments

Paris, Sept 28 (AFP/APP):Here are the latest developments in the coronavirus crisis:

– Jabs for kids –
Pfizer and BioNTech says they have begun submitting data to the US Food and Drug Administration for the highly anticipated authorisation of their Covid-19 vaccine in children aged five to 11.

– Vaccine rights plea –
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa asks the World Trade Organization to suspend intellectual property rights for Covid-19 vaccines to bridge the huge gap in vaccination rates worldwide.

– Iranian opening –
Iran will resume issuing visas to foreign tourists from next month, officials say, after suspending services for 19 months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

– Tokyo ends emergency –
A pandemic state of emergency targeting nightlife in Tokyo and other Japanese regions will end this week, Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga says, as cases nosedive nationwide.

– Chelsea’s Kante positive –
N’Golo Kante is out of Chelsea’s Champions League match against Juventus on Wednesday after testing positive for coronavirus.

– More than 4.7 million dead –
The coronavirus has killed at least 4,752,875 people since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to an AFP compilation of official data.

The US is the worst-affected country with 690,426 deaths, followed by Brazil with 594,653, India with 447,373, Mexico 275,676 and Russia with 205,531.

Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were the US with 2,403, followed by Russia with 852, a new record, and Iran with 289.
