Sri Lanka becomes first victim of new ICC law

MELBOURNE – February 14 (ONLINE): Sri Lanka on Sunday became the first team to be punished as per the new International Cricket Council (ICC) law against slow over-rate.

Earlier, team captain and players were fined for maintaining slow over-rate during the match but the law was recently changed by the ICC. Sri Lanka’s men’s cricket team on Sunday became the first team to pay the price as per new law.

As per the new law, last over of any T20I innings must start after 85 minutes from the start of match. However, Sri Lanka could not comply with this rule during Sunday’s match against Australia.

Therefore, Sri Lankan captain was directed by on-field umpires to remove another fielder from outside the thirty-yard circle. This over was bowled by debutant Nuan Thisara, who gave away 16 runs.
