The Church Potluck Mystery That Nearly Ended a Marriage

At a packed Sunday church potluck in a small American town, Pastor Mike noticed something unusual.

Every year, the ladies of the church brought their best dishes. There were casseroles, pies, cookies, and enough potato salad to feed an army.

This year, however, one husband looked absolutely miserable.

Tom sat alone at a table staring into space while his wife, Susan, chatted happily with everyone.

Concerned, Pastor Mike walked over.

“Tom, my son, you look troubled. Is everything okay?”

Tom sighed deeply.

“Pastor, I think Susan is keeping secrets from me.”

Pastor Mike raised an eyebrow.

“Secrets? What kind of secrets?”

Tom leaned closer.

“For the past month she’s been disappearing every Thursday evening.”

The pastor looked surprised.

“Have you asked where she goes?”

“Of course!”

“And what does she say?”

“She says she’s attending a church committee meeting.”

“Well, that sounds reasonable.”

Tom shook his head.

“That’s what I thought. But last Thursday I decided to follow her.”

Now the pastor was curious.

“And?”

Tom lowered his voice dramatically.

“She drove across town… parked behind a building… looked around carefully… and went inside.”

“Inside where?”

“A dance studio!”

The pastor nearly dropped his coffee.

“A dance studio?”

“Exactly! I knew something was going on.”

“What did you do?”

“I waited outside for two hours imagining the worst.”

The pastor swallowed hard.

“And when she came out?”

Tom sighed.

“She was carrying tap shoes.”

Just then Susan walked over carrying a plate of brownies.

“Hi Pastor!”

The pastor smiled nervously.

“Susan, your husband tells me you’ve been taking dance lessons.”

Susan laughed.

“Of course! I wanted to surprise him for our anniversary.”

Tom crossed his arms.

“Then explain the mysterious phone calls.”

Susan rolled her eyes.

“Those were from the instructor.”

“And the secret receipts?”

“Costumes.”

“And the glitter I found in the car?”

“Tom, it’s a dance recital, not a criminal operation.”

The pastor chuckled.

“Well, mystery solved.”

Susan smiled.

“Actually, there’s one more thing.”

Tom looked worried.

“What now?”

She reached into her purse and handed him an envelope.

“Open it.”

Tom opened the card and read aloud:

‘Congratulations! You have successfully completed Beginner Couples Dance Class.’

Tom blinked.

“What?”

Susan grinned.

“Your first lesson starts Tuesday.”

Tom stared at her.

“I’ve never agreed to dance lessons.”

Susan smiled sweetly.

“You did when you said, ‘I’d do anything for you.'”

The pastor burst out laughing.

Tom looked around the room and realized every husband at the potluck was laughing too.

Then one of them shouted:

“Welcome to the committee, Tom!”

And that’s when Tom learned the most dangerous words a husband can ever say aren’t “Yes, dear.”

They’re:

“I’d do anything for you.” 😄
