Russia-Ukraine conflict: China opposes Western Sanctions on Russia

BEIJING – February 28 (ONLINE): China said Monday it does not support sanctions imposed over Russia by the western countries, in wake of intensifying Russia-Ukraine conflict.

A statement issued by the Chinese foreign ministry said that China opposes ‘illegal’ and ‘unilateral’ sanctions over Russia. Sanctions do not resolve issues rather intensify them, the statement added.

Chinese foreign ministry, while reacting to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement of putting the nuclear arsenal on stand-by said that ‘genuine security concerns of all states must be taken seriously’.

China urged all parties to remain calm and restrain from further intensifying escalation, and added that China always stood with the justice and peace.

It is pertinent to mention here that United States and Western block countries had imposed severe political and economic sanctions over Russia, after it invaded Ukraine. The US and its allies say sanctions will hurt Russia and hold it accountable for the ‘crimes it committed during war’.
