World leaders will meet virtually today and tomorrow for the 2020 Riyadh
Summit to address global challenges. The meeting closes the work of the G20
Saudi Presidency this year under the theme “Realizing Opportunities of the 21st
Century for All.” The Saudi G20 Presidency is committed to leading joint efforts to
build strong, sustainable, and inclusive growth and recovery. This can only be
achieved by tackling inequalities and supporting the most vulnerable, ensuring
opportunities for all, and enabling access to basic services for development.
The COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated the need to achieve these goals and
demanded a quick reaction to save lives while ensuring a better future for all. The
G20 has led the fight against the global pandemic, taking swift and unprecedented
action by contributing over $21bn to support global health systems and the hunt
for a vaccine, making available over $14bn in debt relief for developing nations to
ensure they can focus their resources on fighting the pandemic, and injecting $11
trillion so far to safeguard the global economy and protect lives and livelihoods.
With a focus on restoring growth, through the COVID-19 crisis, the discussions
today will begin at 4:00 PM local time, with a side event focused on pandemic
preparedness and response taking place shortly after.
The agenda continues Sunday at 3:30 PM local time with a side event on
safeguarding the planet, followed by leaders’ discussions at 4:00 PM revolving
around recovering stronger by putting in measures to build resilience. The Saudi
Leadership will be holding a press conference after the summit ends brief the
world on the Summit’s main conclusions.
