THARPARKAR, Sep 15 (APP): The UNO Country Director for Food and Agriculture in Pakistan Florence Rolle along with a delegation Thursday held meeting with the Deputy Commissioner Tharparkar Hafeez Ahmed Siyal and reviewed the relief and rescue activities being carried out for rain affected people of the district.
According to district administration spokesman, the Deputy Commissioner briefed the delegation about devastation of barrage command areas of the district as a result of recent unprecedented heavy rains adding that the rains had not only badly affected the people but also devastated the crops and livestock of the district.
He informed that the provincial government was making all out efforts to provide maximum relief to rain victims and dispose of the rainwater which accumulated in the fields.
The provincial government has also been engaged in rehabilitation of the affected people, he said and informed about the efforts of the district administration in this regard.
On the directives of the provincial government, the district administration has been actively engaged to drain out the accumulated rainwater into the sea through Dhuro Puran canal of Left Bank Outfall Drain.
The process of draining out the accumulated rainwater was slow as Dhuro Puran canal was flowing beyond its capacity, he informed and added that the government was making all out efforts to save the canal from occurrence of breaches by strengthening the embankments.
As a result of unprecedented heavy rains, the deputy commissioner informed that around 13,000 people have been affected in the barrage command area of the district.
Besides 13,000 rain affected people, the rain victims of Umerkot and Badin districts who residing nearby Tharparkar limitations are also coming to different parts of the district for taking shelter, he informed and added that the district administration has also been engaged in registration of these rain victims.
The deputy commissioner informed the delegation that the district administration Tharparkar has established a tent city at the cattle farm of Naukot Fort for rain victims, where cooked food, drinking water and health facilities are being provided to them.
The DC also informed the delegation that the livelihood of the people of Tharparkar district depends on livestock adding that the provincial livestock department has set up cold chain chiller plants in different parts of the district to continue the transportation of milk to the market. The recent rains will benefit the growers of the area to sow crops and vegetables including wheat, millet, guar and peas, he informed.
Florence Rolle and other members of the delegation expressed deep sympathies with the rain victims and assured that with the support of the government all out efforts would be made to rehabilitate them.
