ISLAMABAD, SEP 26 (ONLINE): Senate Parliamentary Committee while calling for holding general election within constitutional period of 90 days has recommended Election Commission (EC) to shorten process of delimitation of constituencies.
Secretary Election Commission (EC) has said next general election will take place in last week of January. No political party is favorite of EC at present. We will discharge our constitutional obligations for holding transparent election in the country.
Committee met here under Chairman Senator Taj Muhammad in Parliament house Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by members of committee, secretary parliamentary affairs, secretary EC, Special secretary, DG IT and other officers.
Chairman committee said as per constitution it is must that general election should be held within 90 days of dissolution of assembly.
For what reason the constitutional requirement is not being met.
Secretary EC said EC was prepared to hold election as per constitution. But population census was accepted before end of government. The delimitation of constituencies were must under constitutional obligation. After making consultation with the legal experts for three days decision was taken for conducting delimitation.
Committee has also expressed its reservation on using statistical department tablet.
Senator Kamaran Murtaza said election schedule is not being announced by EC which is giving rise to doubts.
