ISLAMABAD – Pakistan People’s Party yesterday said victory of the PPP candidates in Sindh bye-elections was a referendum against federal government. Former president Asif Ali Zardari felicitated Jiyalas (diehard workers) on victory in two bye-elections in Sindh and said that PPP will write history of successes. In a statement Asif Ali Zardari congratulated Jam Shabbir Ali and Yousuf Baloch for winning bye-elections from Sanghar and Malir respectively. He said party office-bearers and elected representatives should dedicate themselves to serve the people because the people were the real power and strength of the party. “The Sindh chief minister, ministers and elected members of assemblies are the servants of the people because the people vote for the party and elect the party candidates for their services for the people,” Zardari said. On February 16, the PPP was able to retain its Malir PS-88 seat after its candidate Yousaf Baloch received 24,251 votes, according to the unofficial results released by the Election Commission of Pakistan. Baloch is the son of Murtaza Baloch, the former minister for human settlement. The seat fell vacant after the latter died of Covid-19 in June last year. Separately, PPP candidate Jam Shabbir Ali won PS-43 by-election in Sanghar, according to unofficial results. PPP Secretary General Nayyar Bokhari said the bye-elections results were a referendum against the PTI-led government. “People have rejected the PTI and its policies. The people have voted for the PPP,” he said. The PPP leader said the party will perform better in the Senate polls.
