MoHR Marks International Human Rights Day 2025 in Collaboration with UNDP

ISLAMABAD, Dec 24 (APP): The Ministry of Human Rights (MoHR), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), marked International Human Rights Day 2025 at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad, bringing together ambassadors, representatives of United Nations agencies, international non-governmental organizations, civil society groups, and senior government officials.

The event reaffirmed Pakistan’s continued commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights across all segments of society.

This year, Human Rights Day was observed under the theme “Human Rights: Our Everyday Essentials,” underscoring that human rights are integral to daily life and form the foundation of an equitable, inclusive, and just society.

Addressing the gathering, Federal Minister for Human Rights Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasized that human rights are central to democratic governance and social cohesion. He highlighted the government’s ongoing initiatives to strengthen legal protections for vulnerable groups, enhance access to justice, and promote equal opportunities for all citizens.

“Human rights are not abstract ideals; they are lived realities. Upholding them in every sphere of life ensures dignity, safety, and equality for all,” the minister said, calling for collective commitment to translating these principles into practice.

Federal Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment at the Workplace (FOSPAH) Ms. Fauzia Viqar highlighted the critical link between human rights, women’s protection, and workplace safety. She stressed the importance of creating harassment-free environments and shared details of FOSPAH’s initiatives aimed at raising awareness, strengthening institutional mechanisms, and empowering women to assert their rights without fear.

“Ensuring safe and equitable workplaces is not only a statutory obligation but a fundamental human right and an everyday necessity,” she remarked.

In a landmark development, the Ministry of Human Rights, in collaboration with the Research Society of International Law (RSIL), launched a study titled “Harmonising Pakistan’s Laws with International Human Rights Standards.” President of RSIL Ahmer Bilal Soofi said the initiative marked a significant milestone in strengthening Pakistan’s human rights framework.

He noted that the study offers concrete recommendations to align domestic legislation with international human rights standards, ensuring that legal protections are effective, comprehensive, and sustainable. “This initiative reflects Pakistan’s proactive approach to advancing human rights through evidence-based reforms and meaningful partnerships,” he added.

The launch of the study represents a forward-looking step toward legal reforms, further reinforcing Pakistan’s commitment to upholding international human rights standards and safeguarding the rights of all citizens.
