Govt decides to end free electricity facility for officers

Islamabad, Oct 09 (Online): The federal government has finalized to end the free electricity facility for the officers of the electricity companies and recommended to stop providing monthly free units to Grade 17 to Grade 21 officers.

The Cabinet Committee on Energy will give final approval on the Power Division’s summary tomorrow.

Abolishing the facility of free units will save more than 6 billion rupees annually. It has been recommended to give 15 thousand 858 rupees instead of 450 monthly free units to grade 17 officer, 21 thousand 996 units per month instead of 600 free units to grade 18 officers, 37 thousand 594 rupees to grade 19 officer instead of 880 free units per month, 46 thousand 992 rupees instead of 1100 free units to grade 20 officers, 55 thousand 536 rupees instead of 1300 free units to Grade 21 officers,
24 thousand 570 rupees instead of 650 free units per month to Grade 17 officer of Generation Company, 26 thousand 460 rupees instead of 700 free units per month to Grade 18 officer of Generation Company, 42 thousand 720 rupees instead of 1 thousand free units per month to Grade 19 officer of Generation Company, 46 thousand 992 rupees instead of 1100 free units per month to Grade 20 officer of Generation Company, 55 thousand 536 rupees instead of 1300 free units per month to Grade 21 officer of Generation Company.

Since 1974, free electricity has been provided to WAPDA employees. Employees also sell free units.

The free electricity facility will continue for the time being for the employees up to grade 16.

Free units left over each month are rolled over to subsequent months. The monetization rate for officers will remain fixed at the tariff of July 2023. The Finance Ministry has opposed both free units and monetization, sources said.
