ECP rejects single panel by LHC for election tribunals

ISLAMABAD, June 01 (Online): Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has rejected single panel name by Lahore High Court (LHC) in connection with election tribunals and decided to resort to Supreme Court (SC).
The meeting of ECP was held under Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) on Saturday.

The legal team briefed the meeting on decision of LHC and ECP powers in connection with election tribunals.

The legal team told the meeting ECP is of opinion that Chief Justice (CJ) LHC can not decide on his own about name of one judge for tribunals under election act.
The tribunals were to be set up after consultation of election commission with chief justice of LHC under election act.

CJ LHC nominated judges one each for election tribunals. ECP had sought panel of judges for two election tribunals from CJ LHC.

According to sources ECP has started making consultation for constitution of both of the tribunals under new ordinance.

Two out of four tribunals have already been set up regarding election petitions in Punjab.
