ISLAMABAD – The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) will conduct investigation in the controversial video of Ali Haider Gillani and will take appropriate action as a result of the findings of the investigation. A senior official of ECP without disclosing his name told The Nation that the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) has ordered probe into the matter and directed the concerned officers to submit the final report. The official further, however, revealed that the investigation may not lead to disqualification of any member but will at least take action completely on merit. The official further said that the duty of the ECP was to stop corrupt practices and what happened in the video of Ali Haider Gillani was completely a corrupt practice which will be probed on merit. On the other hand a senior expert believed that ECP cannot take suo moto action on controversial video scandal of Ali Haider Gillani as the Election Act, 2017 is silent over the issue. Talking to The Nation, former ECP secretary Kanwar Dilshad said that Election Act, 2017 was silent on issues like these; adding that the ECP had no mandate to take action on the issue. He stated that there was no clear rule in the Election Act 2017 regarding such scandals; adding that the Commission should at least probe into the matter and introduce new laws in order to stop such issues in future.
Meanwhile, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Dr Shahbaz Gill has announced that the election results between Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Yousaf Raza Gillani will be challenged.
In his tweet, Gill said the winning difference was only 5 votes while 7 votes were rejected and they will now challenge this result.
