ISLAMABAD, Jan 30 (Online): Law minister Azam Nazir Tarar while giving indication for extension in the tenure of care taker government has said constitution provides room for extension in the tenure of interim governments.
The period of care taker governments can be increased or decreased within the parameters of the constitution, he said this while talking to private TV channel here Monday.
He held all the decisions have to be made by the election commission. It will give date for election keeping in view constitution and election act.
He went on to say it is premature to say that election will take place under what population census.
A constitutional amendment was made in article 51 of the constitution last time for holding election under interim population census, he indicated.
He underlined that the extension in the period of care taker governments depends on the situation. The election was postponed in 1988 due to floods, he added.
He indicated the election commission in consultation with stake holders had postponed the election due to shahadat of Benazir Bhutto.
New population has been announced, he said adding election commission was constituted during PTI government with their consultation. Chief Election Commissioner was nominated by Imran Khan.
