ISLAMABAD, May 22 (Online): Care taker Punjab government has opposed to hold immediate polls in the province.
Plea has been taken in the reply filed by chief secretary Punjab in Supreme Court (SC) security situation in the province has changed following May 9 incident. Damage was caused to civil and military properties after Imran Khan arrest. Violent protests and demonstrations were held after Imran Khan arrest. As many as 162 police men were injured and 97 police vans were burnt in the demonstrations.
554000 security personnel will be required for polls in Punjab. If election is held now then strength of only 77000 security personnel is available. The powers for giving date for election lie with election commission rather than SC.
Constitutional distribution of powers was violated by giving date of May 14 for polls.
Holding free and transparent election under article 218 is mandate of election commission. In view of distribution of powers SC did not give date for holding polls in KP.
The powers for changing election schedule rest with election commission.
