Islamabad September 28 (Online): The Federal Cabinet on Tuesday discussed PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and his son Suleman Shahbaz Sharif acquittal in the money laundering scam and unfreezing of their assets.
The Cabinet observed that poor handing of the matter by Advisor to Prime Minister Imran Khan on Interior and Accountability Shahzad Akber earned embarrassment for the government. He should take the Cabinet into confidence, but he kept it in the dark, the cabinet members observed.
They said that they are not in a position to defend the government narrative on media due to his poor-handling of the matter.
Sources at the Cabinet said Prime Minister Imran was also not satisfied with the performance of Shahzad Akber. The PM also regretted that Shahzad Akber should take him into confidence on the development.
Shahzad Akber’s narrative so far remained that it was not the court decision but the decision of the London’s National Crime Agency.
The sources said that following the political situation, Shahzad Akber can be removed from his position anytime in the coming days.
Meanwhile, PM Imran is also irritated by his poor handling of the matter. Info Minister Fawad Chaudhry, Interior Minister Shaikh Rasheed, Minister of Aviation Ghulam Sarwar, Minister for Planning and Development and Special Initiatives Asad Umar and Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari expressed their reservations in the meeting.
They were of the view that poor handling of this case earned embarrassment for the government, adding that the entire responsibility is lies on Shahzad Akber’s shoulders.
It was also observed that he kept the cabinet in dark.
The sources said Shahzad Akber has kept silence since last one month and he had been taken away from various matters also because many questions were raised on his performance in the Sugar Scam as he has been failed so far to hold people involved in sugar scam accountable.
East Recovery Unit was established but he could not recover even a single penny. The Prime Minister is also irritated from his performance in East recovery matters.
Earlier, in a major relief for PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif, a British court has ordered the unfreezing of the Opposition leader’s bank accounts and those belonging to his son on Monday.
The decision was taken by the court after the UK’s anti-corruption agency concluded there was no evidence of money laundering, fraud and criminal conduct against them.
Their accounts were frozen after the government asked the UK to assist in the recovery of criminal assets to the State, triggering a wide-ranging investigation.
