States recognize governments, not UN, after Taliban formed their setup: Spokesman

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 07 (APP):The United Nations said Tuesday it does not engage in acts of recognition of governments, as the Taliban announced the formation of an interim government.

“The Secretariat of the United Nations and the offices, funds and programmes do not engage in acts of recognition of governments, as this is a matter for the member states,” UN Deputy Spokesman Farhan Aziz Haq told reporters at the regular briefing in New York, while responding to a question.

The Taliban announced the new Afghan government, with Mullah Mohammad Hasan Akhund as its head and Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar his deputy.

At the same time, the UN Spokesman said, “Only a negotiated and inclusive settlement will bring sustainable peace to Afghanistan.”

The United Nations, he added, remains committed to contribute to a peaceful solution, promote the human rights of all Afghans, notably women and girls, promote sustainable development in line with the Agenda 2030, and provide life-saving humanitarian assistance and critical support to civilians in need.”
