Cold wave sets in as thick fog darkens several cities in Punjab

LAHORE, Dec 17 (INP): Dense fog in the plains of Punjab on Friday morning made the visibility very low in a number of cities and disrupted road and air travel and routine life of people shutting down many motorways.

Punjab cities including Lahore, Jahanian, Okara, Sahiwal, Pattoki, Mian Channu, Multan and Kharian were completely engulfed by the dense fog.

Motorway Police and National Highways (MP&NH) spokesperson said motorways from Lahore to Sialkot, Lahore to Pindi Bhattian, Och Sharif to Rahimyar Khan were surrounded by the dense fog.

Visibility was down to very low in a number of cities including Sahiwal, Gujrat, Kharian, Jhelum, Tilla Gang, Okara, Pakpattan and Arifwala. Motorway, M4, was shut down from Jalalpur Pirwala to Rahimyar Khan and from Shamkot to Pindi Bhattian while Motorway, M5, was reopened for traffic.

Traffic on national highways was also disrupted badly and flights operations at Lahore, Faisalabad and Sialkot were disturbed. Lahore’s famous elevated Ring Road was also closed for traffic. There was no chance of rain in the next 24 hours in the city.

In a fog-relation accident, six people were injured when their bus overturned in Faisalabad. Motorway Police said road users must use front and rear fog lights while travelling. The fog unleashed on the plain areas as snowfall in Northern Areas continued covering the high mountains with the while snow.

Temperature in Leh has dropped to minus 12 degree centigrade with Kalat experiencing the same. The mercury was down to minus nine degree in Kalam and Skardu while in Astore the temperature recorded was minus eight degree centigrade.

Heavy fog around Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore has reduced visibility limit on the runway which disrupted the flights schedule. The situation was at Sialkot and Faisalabad airports.
