Shaheen Afridi surpasses Mohammad Amir to achieve a unique record

LAHORE Oct 22 (Online): Pakistani left-arm fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has overtaken former Green Shirts bowler Mohammad Amir to become the second left-arm bowler to take the most international wickets for Pakistan.

The 23-year-old pacer achieved this record during the 18th match of the World Cup against Australia in Bengaluru on Friday.

Shaheen Afridi had taken 259 wickets before Friday’s match against Australia, equaling Amir and officially overtook Amir with his first two wickets.

Shaheen Afridi has now overtaken legend Wasim Akram as the most wicket-taking left-arm bowlers for the Green Shirts.

Shaheen Afridi took 5 wickets on Friday, taking his tally to 264 international wickets.

Shaheen Afridi has so far taken a total of 264 international wickets in 127 matches (145 innings) while Amir has taken 259 wickets in 147 matches (177 innings).

Wasim Akram took 916 wickets in 460 matches (532 innings).

Shaheen Afridi took a career-best 6/35 against Bangladesh during the 2019 World Cup and took 5 or more catches for the second time in a World Cup, making him only the second Pakistani player after his father-in-law Shahid Afridi to take a World Cup. He took 5 or more wickets twice.

Shaheen Afridi’s figures of 5/54 on Friday are also the best by any bowler in the 2023 World Cup so far.
