China Covid battle postpones Asian Games

HANGZHOU 06 May (ONLINE): Asian Games: scheduled in September at Hangzhou city, has been postponed due to increasing Covid-19 cases in the city, organizers told on Friday.

The event was scheduled in September 10 to 25 at Hangzhou, located at the distance less than 200 km from Shanghai: the biggest city of China, who beard week –long lockdown as ruling party shows zero tolerance to corona.

In the statement Olympic council of Asia told that the decision “was taken by all the stakeholders after carefully considering the pandemic situation and the size of the Games.

New dates of event will be announced in near future, said in statement.
Organizer explained that the 56 competition venues have been constructed in the Hangzhou: city of 12 million at eastern china, and the games attract 10,000 regional athletes.

The also indicated that the plan to hold the games under virus control plan has been taken after successful experience of ‘Beijing Winter Olympics’ that took place in February of this year under strict Covid-secure bubble.

Hangzhou was poised to become the third city in China to host the continental competition after Beijing in 1990 and Guangzhou in 2010.

The OCA also said that the Asian Youth Games, scheduled to be held in December in the Chinese city of Shantou, would be cancelled having already been postponed once.
