ISLAMABAD Aug 13 (Online): Actor Haroon Kadwani has penned a note on mental health, using his character’s journey from his recent offering, Jhoom, to shed light and share his two cents on mental illnesses. In his note, Kadwani addresses the prevalence of mental health issues and the urgent need to prioritise open conversations and support.
“Break the silence on mental health,” began Kadwani in his note. “Mental illness affects one in four people worldwide, making it more common than we think. The actor then highlighted how his portrayal of Aryaan in Jhoom aimed to challenge societal taboos surrounding mental health. According to Kadwani, Aryaan’s character showcases the daily struggles of dealing with depression, anxiety, and anger management, highlighting the ongoing battle that many individuals face.
“According to WHO, 10-16% of the general population in Pakistan suffers from mild to moderate psychiatric illness in addition to 1% suffering from severe mental illnesses and 24 million people in Pakistan are in need of psychiatric assistance,” shared the actor. “Seeking support from mental health professionals can make a significant difference in recovering from these challenges. You are not alone on this journey.”
Kadwani’s note urges people to share their own mental health stories, whether they are tales of triumph or struggles. “Many people face similar struggles and mental health conditions manifest in many ways, unique to each person but together we can foster a sense of belonging and support one another. Communication is key! This was Aryaan’s story. Let’s share our stories, be it triumphs or struggles,” stated Kadwani.
The actor further penned, “By normalising these conversations, we can uplift those going through tough times and show them that there is strength in vulnerability. Forget ‘what will people say’ and let’s stand together, embrace mental health and build a society where everyone feels supported and understood.”
In addition to seeking medical help, Kadwani underscored the significance of spiritual well-being in the healing process. “It is extremely important to remember that while you seek medical help, the real cure is found in the five daily prayers, daily remembrance and prayers prescribed by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Undoubtedly, the cure of every disease and trouble is in the hands of Allah, and there is none except Him who can remove it. I shall support each of you in these times of difficulties through my prayers and continued efforts of spreading as much awareness as I truly can.”
In praise of the show’s concept and its creators, Kadwani applauded Hashim Nadeem for crafting a beautiful narrative and Abdullah Kadwani and Asad Qureshi for addressing real-world issues through their dramas. With his note, Kadwani aimed to shed light on the importance of open dialogue, compassion, and unity in building a society that fosters mental well-being.
