Finance Ministry refutes report on provision of funds to EC for Punjab polls

ISLAMABAD, April 08 (Online): Finance ministry while refuting the reports of release of funds to Election Commission (EC) for polls in Punjab has said no funds have been released from ministry to EC.

The ministry said the media reports in this regard are baseless and fabricated and they have no relevance with facts.

According to finance ministry sources no possibility is there that funds are provided to EC for polls.

Funds have to be released through Economic Coordination Committee (ECC). However no meeting of ECC is scheduled till Monday.
Prime Minister has option of circulation summary for release of funds. However no yes nod has been given in this regard.

It is pertinent to mention here that EC has sought Rs 21 billion against expenses for polls in Punjab.

The three member’s bench of Supreme Court (SC) had also ordered to finance ministry to provide funds amounting to Rs 21 billion till April 10. If funds are not released to EC then finance minister and finance secretary will have to be accountable to SC due to non provision of funds.

The government particularly finance ministry and EC can face the contempt of court proceedings in the event of non provision of funds.
