Lahore, June 29 (Online): It is true that due to climate change mango production is dropping significantly this year but it’s nothing related with the decline in mango exports says Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Standing Commitee on Agriculture, former chairman Ahmad Jawad.
He said Pakistan have an ample production compare with the target of mango exports which we set every year. If our mango production may dropped up to 40% even then we may touch 0.2 million tons in exports easily.
Unfortunately mango export target was stagnant from the last couple of years due to lack of infrastructure. Our maximum efforts to go upto 1,75000 tons.
We may enhance mango export volumes by setting up required mango export infrastructure so that we may start sea shipments to cater big volumes but unfortunately we don’t have and every season we used to lift by air that’s why we can’t shipped optimum volumes and also due to cargo space issues too.
In this regard FPCCI official urged the export development fund (EDF) to approve for setup modern ripening centres at sea ports with latest CA stores to facilitate king of fruit on public private partnership.
“He said through proper sea shipments, 0.1 million tons quantity can be added in mango exports”.
We also understand Global warming is the common problem that farmers need to face, not only mangoes, but all crops will face the increasingly rigorous challenge of climate change in the next few years and even decades.
“China advanced facility will be able to systematically improve the reduction of mango production in Pakistan due to extreme weather,”
Similarly Pakistan needs to enhance cooperation with China, as it has introduced modern cultivation and pest-control methods, optimal sorting and packing technologies, improved logistics and opened up more sales channels to enhance production and sales of the fruit.
