Doha Oct 26 (Online): A Qatar court has sentenced eight former Indian Navy personnel to death.
Indian Navy personnel were arrested in October 2012. They are alleged to have been spying on the submarine program.
The Indian Foreign Ministry has confirmed the Qatari court’s decision, saying that the Qatar court has ruled in the case of eight Indian employees of the Dahra Company. We are waiting for a detailed decision and are in contact with the affected family members and legal teams. We are working on all the legal options.
Indian authorities have not disclosed any details about the charges against these eight people.
It may be recalled that Qatar severed diplomatic relations with Israel after the three-week armed conflict in the Gaza Strip between December 2008 and January 2009.
According to a report, on March 25 this year, cases were registered against the ex-servicemen on charges of alleged espionage.
He was first picked up by Qatari authorities in August 2022 and reportedly spent at least the next eight months in prison.
His bail applications to the Qatari government have been rejected eight times in a row since September last year.
The ex-servicemen include Captain Nutej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vishisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purindu Tiwari, Commander Sugnakar Pukala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta and Sailor Ragesh.
