Prime Minister Imran Khan inaugurates Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System in Karachi

Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System was a project to be made by the collaboration of Federal Govt and Sindh Govt.
BRT main components:
1. Infrastructure (by GoP)
2. Buses (by GoS)
3. ITS (by GoS)
By August 2018 the infrastructure component was still incomplete after 2.5 years of project ground breaking in February 2016. Similarly the process of procurement of buses, software, operations and management contracts was not initiated either.
Federal Govt completed the infrastructure component of the project and in April 2020, it took over the responsibility of completing all other aspects of the project and signed a facilitation agreement with the Sindh Govt.
Despite global supply chain disruptions due to COVID19, Federal Govt completed the project in 20 months after signing contract with the Sindh Govt.
Buses procurement contract was signed on 23rd Dec 2020 and buses arrived in Sept and Oct 2021. Similarly ITS procurement was also done by Federal Govt through SIDCL.
Operators procurements which includes bus operator initiated in Jan 2021 and contract signed in June 2021. Whilst facility management process initiated in feb 2021 and contract signed on Sept 2021.
Green Line BRTS spans on 21KM (11KM elevated) from Abdullah Chowk (Surjani) to Numaish with 22 stations and 80 AC Diesel Hybrid Buses.
Stations are equipped with:
• Escalators (universal access system)
• Elevators (universal access system)
• Passenger Sliding doors (PSD)
• Ticket Vending Machines (TVM)
• Ticket Office Machines (TOM)
• Passenger Information Screens (Real Time Passenger Information)
• Surveillance system (CCTV Cameras)
• Water Coolers
• Turnstiles (automated fare collection system)
• Scanners and walk thru gates
• Informative maps
• Public Address System
Bus Fleet:
GL fleet consist of 80 articulated (18meter) Buses;

o Diesel Hybrid technology
o Low entry Air-Conditioned buses o Doors on both sides
o First door will be for ladies only, second for family and third door for men only
o Capacity 151 (seating 36 + 115 standing)
o Special Self Disinfectant System (for COVID-19)

o Comfortable and reliable
o Cell phone charging port
o Dedicated space for special need persons and women (special needs
sittings)
o Dedicated Screens for Information and publicity o Vehicle Location system

Operational features:
• Timings – from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm
• Ticketing methods (QR paper-based ticket, Fare Cards and Mobile app)

• System name is Karachi Breeze, which is followed in Buses, cards and Ticket Vending Machine
Government of Sindh mandated SIDCL for Green Line Operations:
GOS signed a Facilitation and Implementation Agreement and mandated SIDCL to launch and implement the “Green Line” of the BRTS. SIDCL will operate for a period of three (03) years, for which the contractual responsibilities and obligations of SIDCL will be taken over and novated in favor of GOS at the end of a period.
