In Saudi Arabia, parents can go to jail for children’s absence from school

RIYADH Aug 27 (Online): If students are absent from schools in Saudi Arabia for long periods of time, their parents will have to go to jail.
According to a report published in a Saudi newspaper, in the Kingdom, if a child is absent from school for 20 days without a valid reason, his parents will be punished.

As per report the school administration will be entitled to complain to the board of education for the parents’ negligence and lack of adequate response to the absences, after which the parents can be publicly accused under the kingdom’s Child Protection Law.

An inquiry may be faced by the prosecution.
According to media reports, after the prosecutor completes the investigation, the case will be presented to the court where the judge has the power to issue an appropriate prison sentence against the parents. The report said the move was part of efforts to ensure ‘ideal studies’ in the new academic year. There was no immediate comment from education authorities after the report came out.
