Political, military leadership agree to hold talks with TTP

ISLAMABAD: The political and military leadership has agreed to hold talks with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) within the framework of the constitution.

The talks will be overseen by a parliamentary steering committee. Cases against the banned movement will not be withdrawn while FATA integration will not be roll back.

The PTI in Parliament did not attend the parliamentary committee on national security, while Baloch leaders said there should be talks with those who went to the mountains.

According to sources, the sixth in-camera meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security was held on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif in which political, military and parliamentary leadership participated.

The meeting discussed important issues including the overall national security situation in the country. According to sources, the Prime Minister briefed the committee on the current situation in the country while the military leadership briefed the parliamentary committee on the security situation and the progress of the talks with the TTP.

They informed all the backgrounds in which this series of talks started and briefed on the duration of the talks so far, the meeting was informed that the meeting was facilitated by the Government of Afghanistan with the TTP.

Negotiations are underway. The negotiating committee consists of government-led civil and military representatives. The committee is negotiating within the framework of the Constitution of Pakistan. During the briefing, military leadership apprised of the dangers posed at home and abroad.

The meeting was informed about the steps taken to address the threats to the security of the country and the administrative matters on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

The political leadership expressed satisfaction with the strategy and progress made. According to sources, it was decided in the meeting that no one’s cases would be disposed off.

Those who have cases will face the courts. A rehabilitation program for those sitting on the other side will be implemented. The parliamentary committee will oversee the negotiation process with the TTP.

The meeting was informed that most of the talks with the TTP have reached the final stages. The meeting was attended by Corps Commander Peshawar Lieutenant General Faiz Hameed, President Azad Kashmir Barrister Sultan Mehmood Chaudhry, Prime Minister Azad Kashmir Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, Foreign Secretary Sohail Mehmood, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Owais Noorani. , Members of parliament and others.

The meeting was attended by Maulana Fazlur Rehman, members of the committee negotiating with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban and other officials, but Chief Minister KP Mahmood Khan did not attend.
