IHC accepts PPP, PML-N plea for postponing LB polls in Islamabad

ISLAMABAD, June 22 (Online): Islamabad High Court (IHC) while accepting PPP and PML-N pleas for postponing Local Bodies (LB) polls in Islamabad has directed Election Commission (EC) to conduct delimitation.

The PPP and PML-N petition came up for hearing before single bench of IHC led by Chief Justice (CJ) Athar Minallah here Wednesday.

The court inquired from EC what decision they have made on this matter.

The EC told the court that it has given its clarified stance under government notification regarding LB polls.

CJ IHC Athar Minallah remarked they should tell the election would take place in how many days.

The EC replied the election can be held within 60 to 65 days.

The CJ IHC directed some complaints have come. See them as well. Vote should not be transferred from one ward to other ward.

The EC presented its stance during hearing of the case that first of all new delimitation of constituencies will be conducted and then LB polls schedule will be given. The court should order federal government to extend cooperation in connection with LB polls

The EC said new delimitations will be conducted within 60 days and election schedule will be announced.

The EC said that governments create hindrances in LB polls. The court should order federal government to discharge its constitutional obligations in respect of LB polls.

Later the court while accepting PPP and PML-N petitions for halting LB polls in Islamabad directed the EC to conduct delimitation in 65 days and announce schedule for LB polls.
