Sri Lanka battles fuel shortage as 2 elderly men die waiting in queue at pump

COLOMBO – March 24 (ONLINE) Sri Lanka is battling widespread fuel shortages and inflation. People are waiting in long queues at pumps for hours to get fuel.

Two men in their seventies collapsed and died while they were waiting for petrol and kerosene oil in separate queues.

According to Colombo Police, the two septuagenarians died in Kandy and Colombo Suburb after over a six-hour-long wait. The rise in cooking gas prices has forced people to buy kerosene.

For the past few weeks, fuel prices are sky-rocketing and leading to record food inflation in Sri Lanka. The island nation is facing the worst economic crisis as its foreign reserves have dipped. It is unable to pay for the imports of oil and other essential items.
