Police arrest 15 prime suspects of Khannewal mob-lynching

KHANNEWAL – February 13 (ONLINE): Police on Sunday arrested 15 prime suspects of Khanewal mob lynching incident that claimed a person’s life, it emerged.

According to Punjab police spokesperson, police arrested 15 suspects after identifying them through videos. Those who were nabbed included: Muhammad Kashif, Muhammad Riaz, Saqlain, Muhammad Shan, Asif, Nadeem, Qaisar Nazeer, Abdul Ghani, Muhammad Aslam, Muhammad Amir, Aijaz, Mehboob ur Rehman, Muhammad Bilal and Ali Sher.

The spokesperson further said that the accused could be seen hitting the victim Aslam with bricks and sticks. He said that 85 people have been arrested so far.

A middle-aged man was stoned to death by a mob in Jungle Dera village of Khanewal district’s Mian Channu on Saturday.

The victim rep¬orte¬dly claimed innocence but the villagers first tied him up to a tree and then hit him with bricks until he died.

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Sunday took notice of a mob lynching incident in Khanewal over alleged desecration of the Holy Quran the previous night, saying “zero tolerance” would be shown to the perpetrators and action would be taken against police officials who “failed in their duty”.

“[I] has asked Punjab IG (inspector general of police) for [a] report on action taken against perpetrators of the lynching in Mian Channu and against the police who failed in their duty.” The Prime Minister wrote on twitter.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Sunday condemned incident of mass-killing of man in Channu.

“Incident has shaken the whole nation” Bilawal said in his condemnation message. He said that such incident are ‘point to ponder’ for the state.
“Such mass-murders on the basis of only assumptions are question mark at state’s writ” Bilawal added. He said that extremists and such incidents were damaging Pakistan’s image globally.
