ISLAMABAD, Jan 15 (Online): Election Commission (EC) has refused to postpone general election in the light of Senate’s resolution.
EC has sent circular to Senate Secretariat on resolution adopted by Senate seeking postponement of election on February 08.
It has been said in the letter that we reviewed your resolution. EC announced the date of February 08 for polls in consultation with the president. Directives have been issued to care taker governments for peace and security on occasion of polls.
EC further said it expressed its resolve in Supreme Court (SC) that election will be held on February 08. In the past general election and election of local governments have been taking place in winter. Therefore, the advice on postponing election at this stage is not proper advice and the general election-2024 cannot be postponed.
It may be mentioned senator Dilawar Khan had tabled resolution in Senate on January 5 in connection with postponement of general election which was adopted with majority vote. Only 14 senators were present in the Senate at the time of approval of the resolution.
A day before Senator Bilal ur Rehman had filed resolution in Senate demanding postponement of election.
