“Driving a train is a lot like a long-term relationship,” the veteran says, leaning back in his chair. “At first, it’s all about the high-speed thrills and making sure you’ve got plenty of steam in the boiler.”

The trainee nods, taking notes. “And then?”

“Then,” the driver says with a wink, “you realize the real secret to a satisfied passenger is all about the handling. You have to know exactly when to ease off the throttle, when to apply just the right amount of pressure, and—most importantly—how to stay in the tunnel until everyone has reached their final destination.”

The trainee asks, “What if I’m running a little behind schedule?”

The veteran grins. “Son, in this business, nobody complains if you take your time getting into the station—as long as the ride was smooth and you finished with a controlled release of pressure.”
