A farmer’s wife, Martha, came into the kitchen one morning looking very pleased with herself.
Her husband asked, “Why are you smiling like you just won the lottery?”
Martha said, “I made a smart investment today.”
The husband nearly dropped his coffee.
“An investment? You?”
“Yep,” she replied. “I gave our daughter $100.”
The farmer frowned. “That’s not an investment. That’s spending money.”

Just then their daughter walked in carrying several shopping bags.
The farmer groaned. “See? Gone already.”
But Martha was still smiling.
A few minutes later, the daughter handed her mother a beautifully wrapped gift.
“Mom, thanks for the money. I bought what I needed and used the rest to get you this.”
The farmer shook his head.
“You gave her $100 and got one gift back. That’s a terrible return.”
Martha laughed.
“Not really. Last year I gave her $50 and got nothing!”
The farmer stared for a moment and finally nodded.
“Well, in that case…”
“What?”
“You’re right.”
“See?”
“That’s the first investment on this farm that’s actually doubled its return!”
