Supermarket giant with 1,400 locations to close city centre superstore

A popular city-center supermarket is set to close, with management confirming another branch will also shut down next month.

Sainsbury’s, which operates 1,400 stores across the UK, is closing its Foss Bank branch in York. The store, which first opened in 1984, will shut its doors as its current lease comes to an end after more than 40 years of operation.

Additionally, the Stamford Hill branch in London is scheduled to close on February 1, 2025.

The closures, first announced in March last year, sparked frustration among locals, many of whom expressed their disappointment on Facebook, describing the news as a shock.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “We would like to thank our loyal customers for their support throughout the store’s many years of serving the local community, and for all the kind messages we have received since this news was announced.”
