My grandfather was the world’s most cheap person. Everyone in the family joked about how he would count every penny, reuse things long after they should have been replaced, and avoid spending money whenever he could. Some people called him stingy, while others simply said he was impossible to shop for.
When he passed away, I didn’t expect much from his belongings. He was never the type to leave behind expensive gifts or grand gestures. So when I received a $30 gift card from him after he died, I almost laughed.
It seemed like the perfect final example of who he was.
For some reason, though, I decided to keep the gift card and actually use it instead of giving it away. I had no idea that one small decision would completely change my life.

I looked at her, confused.

The entire store went silent. Customers turned toward us, wondering what was happening.

I had no idea what she was talking about.
She explained that the gift card I was holding was not an ordinary $30 gift card. Years earlier, the store had created a hidden promotional contest where one special gift card contained a life-changing prize. The winning card had been purchased, but the person who received it never redeemed it.
For ten years, the million-dollar prize had been sitting there, waiting for someone to discover it.
And somehow, that person was me.
The store manager rushed over to verify everything. He carefully examined the card, checked the records, and finally confirmed the unbelievable news.
My grandfather’s “stingy” little gift wasn’t cheap after all.
It was a hidden treasure.
The man everyone thought only cared about saving money had unknowingly left me a fortune that changed my entire future in an instant.
I later wondered if my grandfather had ever known about the contest or if he had simply bought the gift card because it was the cheapest option available. I never found out the answer.
But one thing became clear: the gift I almost ignored turned out to be the most valuable thing he ever gave me.
