Ordinary Hobbies, Hidden Lives, and the Secrets We Never Expected

Hobbies are meant to be a form of escape, a way to relax and unwind. But what happens when those personal interests turn into something far more complex? Sometimes, what starts as a simple pastime can spark suspicion, surprise, or even conflict. Whether it’s a seemingly innocent activity or a hidden obsession, some hobbies can hide secrets that no one expects.

1.

I started suspecting my husband was having an affair. He’d been distant lately, always texting late at night, and seemed to be hiding something. Every small habit change felt like a clue I was slowly piecing together, and my mind refused to consider anything innocent anymore. One evening, I followed him after work, sure he was meeting someone. I even rehearsed what I would say when I caught him.

To my surprise, he drove straight to a tiny, run-down building on the outskirts of town. I waited in the car, heart racing so loudly it almost drowned out my thoughts. I expected a confrontation, maybe even heartbreak, but instead there was only silence and confusion as minutes dragged on. When he finally emerged, he wasn’t with another woman. He was carrying a large duffel bag filled with… old board games?

It turned out, he had joined a competitive board game club. He’d been practicing for weeks, trying to win a national tournament. He was so embarrassed to tell me, thinking I’d find it silly. I couldn’t believe it. All this time, I had assumed the worst, when in fact, he was just obsessed with board games—and hiding it like it was a crime.

I have my friend in the passenger seat holding the steering wheel at the bottom while I drive, so I can dance enthusiastically—flailing my arms around like I’m at a rave—and see how many terrified looks I can get. Sometimes drivers slow down just to stare, as if they’re trying to figure out whether they should call someone or just keep going.

3.

Sometimes when I’m bored, I will Google bars and restaurants in other countries, look at their menu, and try to decide what I would get to eat or drink if I was there. I go as far as imagining the atmosphere, the lighting, even the sound of conversations around me. It helps me pass the time, and who knows, maybe one day I’ll be able to eat at one of these places.

When I’m on a train, bus, or tube, I find myself imagining what it would be like to be stuck with those people in a post-apocalyptic survival group. Who would be useful? Who would be a hindrance? What would my social standing in the group be? Which women would I try to flirt with? The more I observe them, the more the scenario builds itself in my head like a quiet movie.

I find this works best on forms of public transport with multiple stops. It allows me to judge the stations based on who gets on and off. Has the group improved or degraded? Sometimes I even catch myself subtly re-evaluating alliances in my head depending on who walks in next.

5.

I’m a mom nearing 50, and I really enjoy playing Fortnite. Maybe that’s not so weird, but in my social circles, hardly any women play video games—let alone one that’s popular with kids the same age as my own. Sometimes I even feel like I’m slipping into a world I’m not supposed to be part of, but I keep playing anyway.

6.

I record myself reading books aloud, like Berenstain Bears chapter books, Choose Your Own Adventure, Goosebumps, and more. I do the voices, edit out mistakes, and sometimes add music or sound effects. Then I listen to those recordings while doing household tasks or, especially, when I can’t sleep. Hearing my own voice reading helps me doze off like you wouldn’t believe, almost like someone else is there in the room reading to me.

7.

I build virtual houses in The Sims to post on the gallery. I think I’m up to around 8,000 downloads (which isn’t that much, but… yeah, I post often). Sometimes I wonder who is living in those digital spaces I created in other people’s games.

On days off, when no one’s around, I might post five builds in a day. I just find it super relaxing. I like to flesh everything out with little knick-knacks so it looks like real people live there. So yeah, I’m an adult who plays dollhouse. What about it? And sometimes I catch myself staring at the screen longer than I should, like I’m waiting for the house to breathe.

I used to make catalogs of people. I had some pretty bad social interaction issues, so I used it to keep track of information about them. It was like having a folder in my brain for each person. Sometimes I would even update details I thought I might need later, like patterns in their behavior or things they repeated often.

It’s subconscious now, but occasionally I’ll bring up something super specific, and people either think it’s sweet or really weird. Sometimes I wonder if I remember too much… or if I was never supposed to organize people like that in the first place.

9.

I design new types of pasta. It’s fun to think of all the elements—shape, ingredients, texture, etc.—and how you can innovate upon them to create something completely new. I’ve always loved sculpture, but this is even better because it’s pasta, and I get to eat it. Sometimes I even test shapes in my mind like I’m solving a quiet design puzzle no one else sees.

10.

I watch a lot of extraction videos on YouTube. Everyone knows about pimple extractions, but what about mango worm extractions? Ingrown toenail extractions? Earwax extractions? Rocks being removed from horse hooves? Ingrown hair extractions? I sometimes realize how long I’ve been watching without blinking.

I just enjoy seeing things being taken out of other things. It’s like, “Ah yes, this creature has benefitted. Good has been done here.” Not even my husband knows, and I do not plan on telling him. Sometimes I even pause the videos at the most intense moment, like I’m bracing myself for something I can’t unsee.

11.

When I’m in a line at a grocery store or somewhere similar, I listen for the cashier’s ’go-to’ phrase. It’s usually something like “Have a nice day,” “Have a good one,” or “Take it easy.” Most cashiers say the same thing to each person, so it’s easy to pick up on, like a pattern forming under polite conversation.

After my transaction is over, and they’re handing me my receipt, I say their phrase just a moment before they can. It gets really awkward. There’s always that split second where they freeze, like reality has skipped a beat.

“Have a nice day!”
“Have a…you too.”

For weeks, I couldn’t shake the feeling that my best friend was too close to my husband. They’d talk for hours, texting back and forth, sharing stories that I wasn’t included in. I was sure something was going on. Maybe an affair? The more I thought about it, the more convinced I became, until suspicion started feeling like certainty.

One night, I confronted her. Her face went pale, and she looked at me nervously before saying, “You don’t understand… I can’t tell you yet.” That only made it worse. I was furious. I had to know. So, I followed her the next day, waiting for the truth to reveal itself, convinced I was finally about to catch them.

It didn’t take long before I saw them meet at a quiet park. But instead of a passionate embrace, they sat side by side, scribbling in notebooks. My chest tightened as I watched, expecting some hidden signal or secret exchange. My best friend wasn’t having an affair—she and my husband had been writing a book together for months. She hadn’t told me because it was meant to be a surprise. They were co-authors working on a novel, building an entire world I wasn’t yet allowed to see.

I couldn’t believe I’d jumped to conclusions. But at least now I understood the closeness—it was all about the story they were creating together, and the secret they had been carefully protecting from me all along.
