Tim decided to marry his long-time girlfriend. One evening, not long after their honeymoon, he was busy organizing his golf equipment. He carefully wiped the dust from each club, checked the grips, and arranged everything in his golf bag exactly the way he liked it. To Tim, it was more than a hobby—it was his favorite way to relax, and he had no intention of giving it up simply because he was now married. Still, he was happy, and he assumed married life would bring only a few harmless compromises.
His wife stood nearby, quietly observing him. After a lengthy silence, she finally spoke: “Tim, I’ve been thinking. Now that we’re married, maybe it’s time you gave up golfing. You spend so much time at it, and you could probably sell your clubs for a good price.” Her voice was calm, almost casual, but something about the suggestion immediately made Tim stop what he was doing. He slowly lowered the club in his hand and stared at her, as if he had just heard something he never expected to hear from the woman he had only recently married.
Tim froze, a horrified expression spreading across his face. Alarmed, she asked, “Darling, what’s wrong?” For several seconds, he said nothing. His eyes remained fixed on her, and the silence in the room suddenly felt strangely uncomfortable. She began to wonder whether she had accidentally touched upon some painful memory from his past. Finally, Tim took a slow breath and looked at her with an expression that seemed almost haunted. “For a moment there, you sounded just like my ex-wife,” he said.
“Ex-wife?!” she exclaimed. “I didn’t know you were married before!” Her surprise quickly turned into confusion. Tim had never mentioned an earlier marriage, and as far as she knew, she was the first woman he had ever walked down the aisle with. Now she was staring at him, waiting for an explanation, while Tim seemed to realize that his careless remark had created a mystery far bigger than he intended.
“I wasn’t,” Tim replied. For a moment, his wife simply stared at him, trying to understand what he meant. Then the realization slowly dawned on her: there had never been an ex-wife at all. Tim had never been married before—and somehow, the woman standing beside him had just managed to sound exactly like the imaginary ex-wife he had apparently already invented in his head. His golf clubs, meanwhile, remained safely in his hands.
