Very Popular Sushi Restaurant Permanently Closed Near You

If you spend any time thinking about restaurants, you might want to know when one closes. It doesn’t matter if that spot is shiny and new, a beloved institution, or something in the middle. At some point it belonged to our city and, like subway tokens, CBGB, and 5pointz, we’re upset to see it disappear from the scene. Here are the notable New York restaurant closures from the past few months, and some potential alternatives if you miss it. If you’re looking for brand-new spots, check out our Openings guide, and for the best of those new places, read our Hit List.

Sushi Azabu

This underground Tribeca sushi spot opened in 2008, and soon become one of our favorite places for omakase. They closed on January 21, with a final dinner.

If you miss it: Check out the Miami location if you’re ever there. For something closer to home, see our guide to NYC’s best sushi.

Il Totano

We had mixed feelings about this subterranean seafood restaurant in the West Village though we did really love the passionfruit crudo. According to Eater, the family behind it (who also run Hoexter’s) plans to flip the concept.

If you miss it: Check out San Sabino, from the Don Angie team, for coastal Italian in the same neighborhood.
