She Followed Her Father Into the Sky: Nathalia Filgueiras’ Dream Ended at Just 20

For Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, flying was more than a career choice. It was a passion connected to her family, nurtured during her school years and already shaping her future before she reached adulthood.

At just 20, she was working as a co-pilot aboard a business jet. On November 1, 2026, she was among nine people killed when a Learjet 60 crashed in Greenacres, near West Palm Beach, Florida. The flight had been travelling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas.

Behind the news of her death was the story of a young woman who had pursued an ambitious goal early. Nathalia came from a Brazilian family, and aviation was part of her life through her father, Allan, himself a pilot. Her sister, Giulia, told NBC6 that Nathalia learned to fly from him and described flying as her greatest passion.

That connection became an achievement of her own. In 2023, while still a 17-year-old senior at West Boca Raton Community High School, Nathalia earned her pilot’s licence. It was an early milestone in a profession that demands study, discipline and practical training.

Her progress took her from a school aviation programme to the cockpit of a Learjet. Her qualifications permitted her to serve as co-pilot on the aircraft, although she was not qualified to command that flight. On board that Sunday, she was flying alongside Captain Jeffrey Gregory.

During the flight’s final minutes, radio transmissions captured Nathalia communicating with air traffic controllers as the crew faced an escalating emergency. She reported ice accumulation and severe turbulence before the aircraft crashed. Investigators are still examining what happened; those transmissions alone do not establish the cause.

Those final recordings tell only a small, painful part of her story. Her life also included the years of learning that came before them: a daughter following her father’s example, a teenager earning her licence and a young professional beginning to find her place in aviation.

Her death cut short a future whose possibilities were still unfolding. For the family who encouraged her and watched her progress, Nathalia was far more than a name on a passenger manifest. She was a loved daughter and sister who had found something she wanted to dedicate her life to—and had already begun making that dream real.
